Mail and OneDrive sit in the Microsoft 365 backup and are covered on their own page; here it is about what lives outside the tenant: the files on the device, the local profile, the installed applications, and — on machines where it is possible — the system disk as a whole. In practice there is **always something on the machine**: a project between version-control pushes, a local script, a downloaded customer file, a PST no one wants to talk about, a certificate cache. And the profile — saved logins, a bookmark list grown over two years, and the small adjustments that make the user productive specifically on *their* machine. **The common incident is not a stolen laptop.** It is a disk failure on a three-year-old machine, a user profile broken after an OS update, an encrypted folder after a ransomware attack that reached a single user, or a consultant packing up and taking the laptop with them. In all four, the question is the same: *what comes back, and how fast?* Mail and OneDrive sit outside this page — they are handled by the Microsoft 365 backup. But mail is not where all the work happens. A sales rep has a local CRM export. An accounting consultant has a copy of the customer's accounting file. A developer has a local copy of a repo not yet pushed. When the laptop stops working, those are the files that decide whether tomorrow goes. ## What is protected Xopero ONE uses an agent installed on the endpoint. Which machines are covered depends on the operating system; **the vendor lists the following versions as supported:** | Operating system | Versions | | --- | --- | | **Windows** | Windows Client 7 and later. Both 32- and 64-bit. | | **macOS** | macOS 10.13 (High Sierra) and later. **Including Apple Silicon** — M-series machines are covered without a separate installer. | | **Linux** | Alpine, Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, CentOS, RHEL, openSUSE and SLES. | **Three backup levels on the endpoint:** - **File level.** You choose which folders and files to protect — the user profile, document folders, local project directories, the PSTs and work material not in the cloud. The common choice for an office machine. - **Image level.** A copy of the entire system disk, including OS, applications and all files. Larger backup, but makes a full machine restore faster than a reinstall from scratch. **Image level for Linux was added in product version 2.4.0** — earlier versions covered only Windows and macOS. - **Bare-metal recovery.** Restore of a whole machine to new hardware, without a prior OS installation. Used when the scenario is disk failure or theft — or when a consultant takes their machine with them. ## Recovery On the endpoint, the question is often not whether data is still there, but whether the user can work within the hour or has to wait a day. The recovery paths differ accordingly: - **Individual files.** The console or the agent on another machine fetches a file, a folder or a version. The common request, usually done in minutes. - **A whole profile or a subset.** Documents, Desktop, Downloads and app data as a unit, when the user is on a replacement machine or a reinstall has been done. - **Image recovery.** When the machine is otherwise fine but needs a previous state back — or when a Linux installation with image-level backup from 2.4.0 and later needs to be restored. - **Bare-metal.** To new or formatted hardware, without a manual OS installation step first. ## Storage options The backup lands wherever you and the customer want it. **Xopero ONE does not lock you to a storage target** — the choice is practical and commercial, not product-bound: - A local folder, SMB or NFS share (NFS v2 and v3; *not* v4) at the customer's site or your own. - AWS S3, Wasabi, Backblaze B2, Google Cloud Storage or Azure Blob. - Any S3-compatible storage. - Xopero Cloud Storage — Xopero's own, within the EEA. **Immutable storage is supported against AWS, Wasabi and Backblaze B2.** That is where an attacker who has reached inside the environment cannot delete the backup behind you. For endpoint backup it is not always justified — cost and purpose decide — but the option is there. ## Four questions to ask the customer 1. **What files would be missed if the machine broke tomorrow morning?** The answer shows whether the customer thinks “everything is in the cloud” or actually knows what lives locally. 2. **How many machines do you have, and how many of them are laptops outside the office network more than half the time?** That decides which kind of storage is reasonable and how the backup is scheduled. 3. **Linux machines — do you need image level?** If yes, make sure the agent version is 2.4.0 or later. 4. **How long should files from a departed employee be kept?** A policy question that is often forgotten until it comes up — better to settle at implementation than when an old folder is suddenly needed back. ## Through a distributor > We do not sell to end customers. It is not a courtesy, it is the business model: everything goes through you, and we never compete with you at the customer. What you get along with the licences: technical pre-sales help, support in a proof of concept, support in English and Swedish, and a contact person who knows your business rather than a ticket number. How the licence is counted for the customer's particular setup is something we go through with you before you quote — in Xopero ONE it is one per protected resource, and for endpoint backup a resource is simply one machine. ## Getting started Tell us what the customer's endpoint estate looks like — how many machines, which operating systems, and how much of the work is actually spread across the laptops rather than central.
