That is why the conversation about GitHub backup often ends before it starts — and the conclusion is reasonable, as long as you only think about files. But a repository is more than code. Issues, pull requests with their reviews, workflows, branch protection rules, teams and permissions exist *only* at GitHub. If they disappear, the code can be cloned back from any developer's machine. The way of working around it cannot. Every clone is a complete copy of the history, and that is exactly why many people dismiss the question. But what makes GitHub more than a file server sits outside that clone. **A deleted repository takes with it everything that was never in Git:** issues and their discussions, pull requests with reviews and approvals, workflows, branch protection rules, the team structure, and who had which permission. None of it can be cloned back from a developer's machine, because it was never there. **And the common incident is not a disaster.** It is someone cleaning up the wrong thing, an integration with too many rights, an account removed when a consultant left, or a script run against the wrong organisation. In those cases the platform is perfectly healthy — the content is gone, and no uptime guarantee helps. It is worth asking the customer directly: *if your GitHub organisation were empty tomorrow morning, what would you miss besides the code?* The answer is usually longer than the person expects. ## What is protected GitProtect publishes its own list of what is covered. **Of the platforms we have been through, the GitHub list is the broadest**, and these are the groups that tend to decide a conversation: | Area | What it covers | | --- | --- | | **Repository** | Branches, commits with message and creator, tags, refs, objects, logs, LFS, wiki, deploy keys, webhooks, the website field, name and description — plus the general settings: merge and squash options, default branch, automatic deletion of head branches, and template repository. | | **Issues** | Open and closed, with assignees, comments, description, attachments, labels, milestones, assigned projects, creator and creation date. | | **Pull requests** | Open, closed and merged, with comments, commits, assignees, description, labels, milestones, creator and creation date. | | **Permissions** | Teams with members, roles, parent team, repository permissions, notifications and visibility — plus direct and outside collaborators with their roles. | | **Branch protection** | Every rule: branch name pattern, required pull request, required conversation resolution, linear history, signed commits and passing status checks, plus locked branch and whether deletions or force pushes are allowed. | | **Automation** | GitHub Actions workflows. Dependabot with alerts, dependency graph and security updates. | | **Planning** | Projects v2 in detail — custom columns for date, iteration, number, single select and text, draft issues, linked pull requests, reviewers, status and status updates. Plus labels, milestones, and releases with assets. | **What the long list really means:** you can rebuild not only the code, but how the work was organised around it. That is the difference between having the files and having the project. ## What does not look the same afterwards A coverage list answers the question *is this backed up?* The harder question — and the one that decides whether the customer is satisfied — is **what looks the same after a restore**. We ask that question of every platform we sell protection for, and for GitHub the answer is unusually good. **One thing you should still know:** support for backing up *Projects (classic)* has been removed. Old backups can still be restored, but they are **converted to Projects v2** in the process. If the customer still has classic projects, the question is not whether they come back as they were, but whether the content comes back in the new form. Classic projects are usually the oldest and least maintained ones — check whether any of them are still in use before you promise anything. Beyond that, the vendor states no limitations for GitHub. **That is worth noting, because other platforms have clear ones.** If the same customer mentions GitLab or Azure DevOps in the next sentence, the picture changes, and we cover that on each of those pages. ## GitHub Enterprise GitProtect has **a separate documentation page** for GitHub Enterprise self-hosted. When we fetched it, we got back the same resource list as for regular GitHub — but we could not tell whether that is because the lists are identical or because the page redirects to the GitHub one. **So we claim nothing about Enterprise here.** If the customer runs Enterprise Server themselves, we confirm the coverage with the vendor before you quote, and come back with an answer you can rely on. The question is already with them. **This is exactly the kind of case where a difference can exist without being written down** — and then we would rather be slow than have you promise the wrong thing. ## Four questions to ask the customer 1. **What would you miss besides the code if the organisation were empty tomorrow?** The answer shows whether the customer is thinking about repositories or about how they work. It is the whole conversation in one question. 2. **Who is allowed to delete a repository or a team?** And how many integrations have write access to the organisation? That is where the real incidents come from. 3. **Are you still using Projects (classic)?** If so — what happens if they come back as Projects v2? 4. **Cloud or Enterprise self-hosted?** If they run Enterprise themselves, we want to confirm the coverage with the vendor before you promise anything. ## Why through a distributor > We do not sell to end customers. That is not a courtesy — it is the business model: everything goes through you, and we never compete with you at your customer. What you get besides the licences: technical pre-sales help, support during a proof of concept, support in English and Swedish, and a named contact who knows your business instead of a ticket number. How the licence is counted for this particular customer is something we go through together with you before you quote. ## Getting started Tell us what the customer's GitHub looks like — how large the organisation is, whether they run cloud or Enterprise self-hosted, and what has to be restorable unchanged.
