Backup

Backup is not one product. It is a set of different problems that happen to share a name. What protects a file server does nothing for a Jira project, and none of it helps a control PC in a pump house on a network with no internet.

So every backup deal starts with the same question: what has to be restorable, and how fast does it have to happen? The answer decides the product — not the other way round. This page goes through the seven workloads we distribute protection for, and what separates them.

ARJ Distribution sells exclusively through resellers and MSPs in the Nordics — Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland. We never sell directly to end customers.

The question is rarely whether the customer has backup. It is what can actually be restored, and how long it takes before the business is running again.

A mark means the product protects the workload — not that it covers every feature in it. Microsoft 365 is the clearest example: the service has more parts and more add-ons than any backup product covers, and the scope differs between the products as well. The same applies to a lesser degree to the other rows. Read the section for the workload below, or ask us — we will tell you what applies to that specific environment before you promise anything. GitProtect is Xopero's own brand for the DevOps part and runs on the same platform.

Endpoints — Windows, macOS and Linux

The hardest device to back up is the one that is rarely on the office network. A laptop that has been running three hours a week on hotel wifi still has to have a usable restore point when it is lost or encrypted.

Much of what the user creates is already in OneDrive or SharePoint, of course. But not all of it: local profiles, settings, work in progress that never had time to sync — and in practice the whole machine if it disappears.

Xopero ONE covers Windows, macOS and Linux, at file level and as a full disk image with bare metal recovery. Endpoints are managed in the same console as the rest of the environment.

Servers and databases

The requirement here is different. A file server can be restored file by file, but a database has to be consistent when it comes back. A copy taken in the middle of a transaction is not a restore point — it is a problem that only shows up when somebody tries to use it.

This is also where recovery time becomes a commercial question rather than a technical one. The difference between four hours and two days decides what you can promise in a contract, and what that contract can cost.

Xopero ONE protects physical Windows and Linux servers, NAS and file shares, and the databases Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL and Oracle — where the database itself creates a consistent copy that is then backed up, rather than being read as files while in use. Hornetsecurity Physical Server Backup is an alternative for physical Windows servers that need to be restorable into Hyper-V.

If the database sits in a virtual machine there is also a setting that decides whether the copy is any good — and it is not switched on by default. The full walkthrough of servers and databases: physical servers, application consistency in virtual machines, and the conditions for each database engine.

How the licences work out in a specific environment is something we go through together with you before you quote. That is the whole point of buying through a distributor.

Hypervisor

Backing up at hypervisor level takes whole machines instead of what is inside them. That makes recovery simpler and usually faster, and it is the right level when the customer runs a consolidated virtual environment.

Two products do it, and the difference between them is decided by which hypervisor the customer runs.

Xopero ONE covers VMware and Hyper-V — agentless against VMware, and with an agent on the Hyper-V host rather than in each guest.

Hornetsecurity VM Backup covers Hyper-V, VMware and also Proxmox VE. If the customer runs Proxmox, that is the route — Xopero ONE does not support Proxmox at hypervisor level.

The Proxmox support is newer than the Hyper-V and VMware support, and today it has limitations worth knowing before anyone promises anything: no replication, no continuous data protection, and no LXC containers — virtual machines only.

Microsoft 365

Microsoft runs the service, but responsibility for the content stays with the customer. Deleted email, an overwritten SharePoint folder or a closed account is the customer's problem to restore — not Microsoft's.

Two products cover Microsoft 365, and they are not equally broad.

Hornetsecurity 365 Total Backup covers mailboxes, OneDrive, SharePoint, Teams, Planner, OneNote and Entra ID. Xopero ONE covers Exchange Online, OneDrive and SharePoint, but not Teams today.

If the customer needs Teams, Planner or Entra ID included, the choice is made. If mailboxes and files are enough, Microsoft 365 can instead sit in the same console as servers and endpoints. Coverage changes between versions, so if a particular workload decides the deal — ask us, we keep track of what applies right now.

Two practical details: Entra ID backup requires the customer to have Entra ID P1, and the backup runs automatically several times a day without the customer scheduling it.

Worth knowing: Hornetsecurity is discontinuing Endpoint Backup on 1 March 2027. The feature has been included in the 365 Total Backup subscription at no separate charge, but after that date the data cannot be restored and no migration path is offered. So do not count on endpoint backup from that product — endpoints are a workload of their own with their own tools, see above.

Source code and DevOps

A Git repository is not a file server. What needs to come back is not only the code but the context around it — issues, pull requests, labels, pipelines and permissions. Without that, the restore is a folder of files, not a working project.

GitProtect.io covers GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket and Azure DevOps — both the cloud services and self-hosted installations. It is Xopero's brand for this world and is administered in the same console, but the licence is separate and counted per repository. A Xopero ONE licence for endpoints or servers does not include it.

Project and issue tracking

Jira and Confluence rarely contain anything that looks like data. They contain ways of working: workflows, field configurations, permissions, issue history, automation rules and SLA data. That is what is hard to rebuild — not the text in the issues.

GitProtect themselves state that Atlassian's own backups are not used to undo a customer's own destructive changes. For an MSP running Jira for a customer, that is usually the argument that decides the conversation.

The product covers Jira Software, Jira Service Management and Confluence. The licence is counted per user and applies to Cloud instances.

ICS/OT and industrial systems

Industrial networks do not look like office networks. The systems are often old, the network is isolated with no internet connection, and the person standing next to the machine when something breaks is rarely from the IT department.

Xopero Sphere Recovery Drive is a separate product built for exactly that: a portable device that creates disk images and bootable media, works entirely without a network or internet connection, and can restore to hardware other than the original. It supports Windows Embedded, other Windows versions and Linux, including older systems, and the images can be imported into Xopero ONE.

The point is that staff on site should be able to restore a control PC themselves, without waiting for IT and without anything needing to be connected.

Xopero names water supply, energy, transport, logistics, mining, building automation and manufacturing as typical environments, and refers to ISA/IEC 62443, NIST SP 800-82 and ISO 22301.

Why through a distributor

We do not sell to end customers. That is not a courtesy — it is the business model: everything goes through you, and we never compete with you at your customer.

What you get besides the licences: technical pre-sales help, support during a proof of concept, support in English and Swedish, and a named contact who knows your business instead of a ticket number. For MSPs, monthly licensing is available where the vendor offers it.

Getting started

Two ways in, depending on where you are:

  • If you have a specific customer — tell us what has to be protected and how fast it has to be restorable, and we will tell you which parts are relevant and what they cost.
  • If you want to get your bearings first — start with the walkthroughs below, or book a short technical call.

About the content on this page. This is a sales-oriented overview — not complete product documentation. The information is checked against the vendors' own documentation in October 2026 and we review it regularly, but features, system requirements and version support change — and a change can get past us. So always check against the vendor's current documentation before anything is promised to a customer: Hornetsecurity's knowledge base and Xopero's help centre for Xopero ONE. If you are unsure, it is faster to ask us — we take the question to the vendor and come back with an answer you can put in a quote. And if something does not work the way it is described — here or in the vendor's documentation — tell us. We report it to the vendor and correct the page.
